Ite a bit The theme of the newsletter was studying composition and they said to read this book and look to film as a place for interesting compositions and inspirationSo even with that intent of getting educated on composition as it applies to photography since I m not a filmmaker though the one film making class I took in college where we made Super8 films was a fun experience I was still extremely impressed with this book It was written in a way that s still pretty experience I was still extremely impressed with this book It was written in a way that s still pretty

G amounts of cameras that allow for interchangeable lens useWhile some cinematography books touch on the use of different lenses this is the first book to treat the topic with the breadth it commands Following the same format of the author's first book the very successful Filmmaker's Eye Learning and Breaking the Rules of Cinematic Composition Filmmaker's Eye Languag. Great book Lots of lessons for beginners or advanced students of filmmaking I love the selection of films used as examples If one were to simply watch all these films they would get a very balanced view of world cinema and all the possibilities it offers There are plenty of titles here I haven t seen and I look forward to catching up with themFor me it was a nice refresher on lenses and how choosing them contributes greatly to what the audience feels and perceivesIn the Breaking the Rules section there are nice tidbits on ways to think outside the box One of my favorites is the Trainspotting example from the Dolly Zoom sectionAlso great examples from Oldboy image systems Marriage of Maria von Braun use of Extreme Close Ups Into the Wild Macro ShotsCOOL TAKEAWAYS In ECU or Macro shots the background does not need to match exactly Audiences accept when something is lit even when it s not realistic or justified Butterflies can block light so that actors are not overexposed in sunny day exteriors I want to someday try a very slow dolly zoom Establishing shots can carry an enormous amount of power I used to take them for granted #Emblematic Shots Can Be Key #shots can be ey in building an image systemI ll eep this as a handy reference in future prep making shot lists and storyboardingCan t wait for Mercado s next book releasing November 1 2015 It s devoted exclusively to lenses Cover has a shot next book releasing November 1 2015 It s devoted exclusively to lenses Cover has a shot Johnny Depp from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Will be reviewing this one again before I start shootingArtfully organised like a textbook yet reads like an immersive story Well explained and full of explanatory images A must for any filmmaker Excellent extremely instructive book I m glad I figured out how to reuest an interlibrary loan in the NYPL system for it It was recommended in an email newsletter I think from LeahAndMarkcom one of the photographers we actually considered for our wedding and whose style I admire Understanding the language of the lens is ey for today's filmmakers and cinematographers Lenses and the different images they produce have the power to propel story evoke dramaticemotional responses from the audience as well as give a film a certain aesthetic Today interchangeable lens systems are accessible than ever due to their decreasing prices and the increasin.

Tall, Dark Rich Lone Star Standoff
Ematic techniues like Hitchcock s rule and compositional guidelines like the Rule of Thirds what I was expecting when reading the book was something like The Visual Story by Bruce Block the actual book I was looking for when I bought The Filmmaker s Eye although being an ignoramus I bought The Filmmaker s Eye first and only found out about The Visual Story when I read Filmmaker s introduction So this book will not provide you with an encyclopedic understanding of the composition elements which Is Fine For Me fine for me I ve now bought and read The Visual Story "Do Not Buy This "not buy this if that is what you are looking forNow with that disclaimer out of the way this book is a wonderful tool in that it can function as a good cheat sheet of sorts when writing a screenplay The book comes in use when you have a strong image in your mind that you want to show but do not now what the exact name for the particular shot is The book enables you to just flip through it until until come upon the particular shot type closest to the one you want and gives its technical name Screenplays have to be written in technical language and while this book is written probably for amateurs than for say film have to be written in technical language and while this book is written probably for amateurs than for say film students it can come in handy assuming you now screenplay formatting This is the very first book I ve read about the cinematic composition on filmmaking and taught me a lot It gives a bunch of both technical and practical information about the secrets of composition and leaves valuable experience on a reader However repeating the same types of information over and over again just to fill the pages makes it boring to read the book after some point Technology is a bit old but good for basics nonetheless This little book is filled with wonderful examples of each type of basic camera shot The breaking the rules examples provide a nice counterpoint A thought provoking recommended read for beginning and intermediate film makers. E of the Lens shows readers in a visually stunning way how crucial lens selection is to the design and intentions of a filmmaker's visual story Scenes from a wide range of movies are shown in 4 color and then broken down to convey what lens was used why it was used and how the reader can use that lens on their own film to achieve the look story and emotions they seek.
