The Secret of the Great Pyramid lAthetic reason for being a kidnapping extortionist is based on a big fatie and the real Lord Blackmere is a horrible excuse for a human being Caroline and Kendale s basic reaction to this is Oh that old rascal ha ha The worst part is that any reaction to Caroline finding out about Kendale s triple Dancing with Mr. Darcy life is completely glossed over It s not clear if she already suspected or she was completely in the dark but there s no shock anger relief or any kind of emotional response Overall this book is such a mess of unlikable characters off the wall antics and nonsensical reactions that it doesn t even seem rational to object to the ending when Kendale is adopted as Lord Blackmere s heir despite such a thing not being remotelyegally possible at the time Regency Regency Christmas romance novels are my
favorite type of romance to read during the type of romance to read during the season This is of course because they remind me of Jane Austen s works Also there s just something very special about this period in English historyIt s wonderful to see Austen s egacy reflected in these books although they might not be uite at the evel of mastery she commanded Still they
Do Abound In Witty abound in witty and ike Austen s novels faithfully observe and comment on the upper classes and sometimes ower classes as well of this fascinating time periodGirard was an American writer yet thanks to travels in England and I m sure thorough research as well she wrote very polished novels with perfect historical accuracy and a keen eye for characterizations The result is that she appears to be a British born author A Husband For Christmas is the third book in a trilogy that began with Charade of Hearts and continued with A Father for Christmas Now I want to read the two previous booksThis short novel with its touches of humor also reflects the Punished legacy of Charles Dickens The back story of theittle girl named Poppy could have come straight out of Oliver Twist for instance I found this combination uite interesting Austen s witty observations of high society and Dickens s concern for social justice The result A most delightful reading experienceAt the beginning of the novel Lady Caroline is the typical pampered aristocrat with a sense of entitlement and a rather His To Protect large ego By the end of it she has grown to become compassionate kinder and much approachable This is inarge measure due to the ittle girl Poppy who mysteriously appears in her carriage one day However it s also due to the witty tongue in cheek observations of her French maid Suzette who knows how to handle Lady Caroline unbeknownst to that worthyIn fact I could go on and on about Suzette I ove how wisely she counsels Lady Caroline while etting her think that all her decisions are self determined Further Suzette always refers to herself in third person although she will at times slyly insert the first person in the middle of a comment This is a shrewd move as she subtly distances herself from these comments while etting La. Ine is enchanted But fate soon puts them in the hands of the infamous Bandit King If anyone can reform him it's Lady Caroline; if anyone can capture her heart it's.
Dy Caroline think that she speaks this way because she s a foreigner Below are some of her comical and very spot on remarksSuzette thought him most pleasant mademoiselle said her maid It is my opinion that His Lordship Thinks That Anyone As Beautiful lordship thinks that anyone as beautiful you must by nature
be charitable as well pg 38 Mademoiselle must practice the patience Suzette is trying to show you that thecharitable as well pg 38 Mademoiselle must practice the patience Suzette is trying to show you that the is not at the end of a straight Ups, Kita Sudah Menikah? line pg 79Suzette really didn t have to go beyond the kitchen It is amazing what information is available right under us You should go there sometime pg 173In short I found this character entirely delightfulAs for Lady Caroline sove interest Kendale he was very dashing indeed I iked that he was not a member of the aristocracy although he had been sponsored by a member of that group who had rescued him from a future ife of crime when Kendale was just a boy Although he had no title Lady Caroline was attracted to him from the very first He s a very charming kind unassuming person with a great head for business as well he has made a fortune with his own fleet of shipsAnd then there s Poppy What a sweet adorable Baby Legacy (So Many Babies little girl she is She immediately wins Lady Caroline s heart as well as the hearts of her entire household staff Taking care of her becomes a full time job for all of them for Poppy is fond of playing peek a boo She totally brings out Lady Caroline s maternal side considerably softening her aristocratic sense of entitlementThere are many touches of humor in this novel Much of it is provided by Suzette and Poppy but another of the characters Elroy who is Lady Caroline s uncle by marriage is outrageously hilarious He s about her age a total fop and fond of gambling His constant whining aside from being annoying is also very funny Still his heart is in the right place where Lady Caroline is concerned His insistence on calling her Caro grates on Lady Caroline s nerves and adds to the funMost of the action in the novel takes place in and around London and the reader is treated to some nice descriptions of that city s most famous parks as well as the social scene of the time The one thing I didn t uiteike about this novel was
the fact that one of the characters was involved in the kidnapping of several aristocratic heirs andfact that one of the characters was involved in the kidnapping of several aristocratic heirs and away with it The whole thing though was a bit confusing This was toward the end of the book which incidentally was also a bit too melodramatic although I did enjoy it anywayAside from the above A Husband for Christmas is an engaging totally enchanting tale a comedy of manners in true Austen style Reading it will make any historical romance reader s Christmas ighter and joyful as wellFor classic iterary fiction and historical romance and nonfiction reviews please check out my second blog MINDSPIRIT BOOK JOURNEYShttpmindspiritbookjourneysblogspo Although there wasn t much about Christmas in this it was a fun story It reminded me of Georgette Heyer books although the Langlais correct pour les Nuls language wasn t uite the same. Paula Tanner Girard ´ 1 REVIEWCaroline wants to find a husband and her father wants her to find a husband but no man has appeared that meets her standards handsome wealthy and daring and a title Kendale was rescued from the stews when he small and invested in him and saved him from a ife of crime He ended up rich and owning many ships and has ret d to England and wants to repay Lord Blackmere but he can t find him He has been kidnapped and Kendale has been acting
The Bandit pay the ransom demands Caroline has found a baby in her carriage on her way to see her old nannyPoppy was placed their by her brother Tom when he thought the andlady was going to sell her and his mother was too sick to help This story comes together when Kendale kidnaps who he thought was Elroy but it was really Caroline whom he has oved since he ret d to England They find Lord Blackmere who was not really kidnapped and Poppy s mother and brother Caroline proposes to Kendale and they marry at Gretna Greene Blackmere gives him his castle and the title to go with it by adopting him Okay so when it comes to Christmas themed stuff my tolerance for schmaltz random shenanigans and contrived coincidences goes up pretty highas the bandit
When it comes to romance I m also enient than I am when I read init comes to romance I m also enient than I am when I read in genres So a Christmas themed romance already has a pretty easy suspension of disbelief threshold to meet But thisthing shattered through it in the first few chapters Apparently this is the third book in a trilogy It was pretty easy to suss out that the author was taking two characters that had played antagonistic roles in previous stories and was pairing them together Our heroine is gradually reforming spoiled brat Lady Caroline who has many flaws but the one the story seems to harp most on is her difficulty in accepting the fact that her father has married a woman of her own age which seemed fairly reasonable to me Our hero is KendaleLord BlackmereThe Bandit King Yup So he s a grown up street urchin who masuerades as the elderly peer who took him in when he was a kid under which guise he does most of the romancing of Caroline when he s not kidnapping young men and occasionally women apparently while constantly ooking down on Caroline because she doesn t know how to cook and clean What a charmer The ridiculous courtship which basically involves Caroline choosing to spend time with a man she thinks is in his eighties over young men who are courting her and then Kendale getting huffy when she realizes she needs to scale back their relationship
When People Think They Are A Romantic Item Then Thingspeople think they are a romantic item Then things even complicated when Caroline winds up with a small child in her hamper and basically adopts her as an accessory Then after ots of shenanigans showing why Caroline should not be entrusted with a small child she and the child are kidnapped by the Bandit King Again this is the dude who is supposedly in Bourdieus Secret Admirer in the Caucasus love with her but he continues to actike a huge jerk to her until it is revealed that his entire symp. Lady Caroline Cavendish wants the perfect beau for Christmas Instead she's been given a baby Someone has Something in Return left a baby girl named Poppy in her carriage and Lady Carol.
